4 Non-Traditional Acne Treatments

If you are using prescription medications or over the counter treatments in order to clear acne, you should boost your treatment program by considering some of the nontraditional programs as well. You may not see the immediate results more common with prescription remedies, but nontraditional treatments work quite well with some types of acne symptoms.

The nontraditional remedies can help you in your quest for overall health and fight acne symptoms as well. Below you will find 4 non-traditional acne treatments.

1. Sunlight and Water

Some sunlight is helpful for general body health and to clear acne, but too much sun can definitely be harmful to the skin whether or not a person is suffering from acne. Contrary to some opinions, a suntan does not cure acne, although a current tan will make red blotches and blemishes less visible. Water as an acne treatment is useful either as an external or internal treatment. Use water to gently clean the skin surface without rubbing or abrading delicate and sensitive skin. Water taken internally, of course is important for nutrition as well as for the strength of the circulatory system.

2. Cleansing Diets

Diets that are intended to cleanse the digestive system certainly can’t hurt the person with acne. However, there has been little research work done to show which of the nontraditional treatments are considered to have the ability to clear acne. Proponents of the various cleansing diets say that the intent is to detoxify and liver and cleanse the blood and circulatory system, as well. Another cleansing diet that promises to help lead the fight against acne is the bowel cleansing diet. If you follow one of these diets, the proponents state that you will clear out the toxins in your system so that they will not be manifested as acne symptoms.

3. Acupuncture

Acupuncture has been recommended as treatment for many conditions from obesity to acne. Proponents say that since acne and many other disorders are the result of imbalance between the yin and the yang of a system, to clear acne you should insert fine needles or wires into precise points of the body. The needles help to align the natural forces so that the negative condition is no longer present. Opponents of the treatment mode do not accept the anecdotal reports and little scientific data is available.

4. Hormone

Another of the nontraditional treatments that are being studied in order to determine their ability to clear acne symptoms is that of hormone treatments. In fact, some birth control pills are now being prescribed as an acne treatment simply because they contain the hormones that have been shown to be effective in treating acne as well as preventing unwanted pregnancy. There is no doubt that fluctuations in hormone levels have been linked to outbreaks of acne, especially in those sufferers in the adolescent years. The exact cause of acne flare ups is still being researched, but it is known that there is a link between hormone levels and acne outbreaks.
